Do yourself a favor, before spring gets here and get a tune-up for your bicycle.  You don’t want to be bringing your bike in the day you should be out riding, because you didn’t get to it sooner.  Our tune-ups are the best in the area with brakes and gears adjusted of course, but we also make sure your bearings aren’t loose and that your chain is in good shape too.

One of the biggest problems cyclists have is that they don’t replace their chain as often as they should.  Although chains seem to be made of a solid material (metal) you can’t always count on the chain to be like it was when it was new.  Over time, a bicycle chain stretches and when it does, the holes in the chain that normally match the teeth on the gears perfectly don’t match as they did when the chain was new.

So what happens?  Since the holes on the chain don’t match, they begin to wear down the teeth on the gears and the next thing you know, instead of just replacing a $20 or $30 chain, you’re replacing a $30 chain and a $40-$60 + set of gears. If you notice when you pedal and put pressure on the gears that the chain slips, or jumps, that means you at least need a new chain, and perhaps a new set of gears too.

Let our expert mechanics tune up your bicycle and check your chains, derailleurs, brakes, bearings, and the like before you take it out this spring and end up walking back down the mountain or calling for a car to come pick you up down the road.

Snowshoeing is a fun winter sport that almost everyone can do. It burns up tons of calories and can be as strenuous or relaxed as you want. Even better, snowshoeing can be a sport the whole family can partake in together without buying lots of gear!

Snowshoeing is an “any time” sport that can be enjoyed for 20 minutes to overnight excursions. Snow conditions are rarely a limiting factor like skiing so the weather can’t be used as an excuse for not getting out. It’s easy to burn 800 to 1000 calories in and hour so it is great exercise when your time is limited. If you add a pair of ski or trekking poles to your gear you can get a “full-body” workout. Because the pace is slower than cross country skiing and the technique isn’t as demanding, there is more time to relax and enjoy the scenery, follow tracks in the woods and let the mind wander.

It’s pretty easy to started, the only specialized equipment you need is the snowshoes. If you run, hike or cross country ski, the clothing is pretty transferable. Hiking boots are recommended unless you are racing. At the Sportsman, we recommend renting snowshoes for your children. Once they have the hang of it, and it becomes a regular family activity, we will fit them for the perfect pair of their own.

Snowshoeing is easy- it is basically walking, but with really big feet. It is a perfect activity for your children- if they are old enough to walk, they are old enough to snowshoe. With kids, don’t start out with a big hike – put on snowshoes and build a snowman in the back yard, make a maze with the track and play follow-the-leader. Keep it fun for the kids and you won’t need to bribe them to go. Snowshoe with the aim that everyone makes it home with a smile on their face.

Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy winter’s fresh air with kids, dogs, and friends. This weekend, plan a potluck supper and take your friends on a full-moon walk around the neighborhood- there is definitely enough snow!

If you haven’t used a GoPro yet, your missing out. The GoPro cameras can turn any fun family event into a memorable and exciting film.
